Thanksgiving is a Great Time to Give Back!

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect back on the past year and be grateful for the opportunity to spend our summers together at camp, but it’s also a great time to give back!

We’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in three great events over the past couple of weeks that engaged our camp families, counselors, head staff & alumni: Camp T-Shirt Day, Morry’s Camp and the Clinton Foundation’s Day of Action for New York.

CAMP T-SHIRT DAY
November 13th was the 3rd Annual Camp T-shirt Day, where people from all around the world took pictures wearing their favorite camp apparel!  Sponsored by the good folks over at Camp Craze, they pledged to donate $5 for every photo that was shared online.  With 679 photos shared, tweeted & posted to Facebook, participants raised almost $4,000 that was donated to the Red Cross to help with Sandy Relief efforts.   The amazing thing was that 105 pictures (15% of the total!) were of our TLC Family of Camps’ campers, counselors, and alumni from all around the world!  We can’t wait until next year to get even more members of our camp family involved.

PROJECT MORRY
Morry’s Camp, a program that sends inner city youth to summer camp, held it’s annual gala last week, and the TLC Family of Camps were happy to attend and support the great work that they do.  The TLC Foundation donated $150,000 that provides the funding for summer camp scholarships along with full service programs that support participants throughout the school year.  It was a great evening where we had the opportunity to hear from some of the campers who have gone through the program and how it continues to change their lives.

CLINTON FOUNDATION: DAY OF ACTION FOR NEW YORK
The TLC Family of Camps and the Timber Lake Foundation were proud to partner with The Clinton Foundation for a Day of Action on Sunday, November 18th, 2012.  Over 1,000 volunteers came together to help victims of Hurricane Sandy in The Rockaways.  Participants worked on a variety of projects; cleaning debris with Project RubiconNY Service and New York Cares, working at distribution sites to sort and hand out supplies to residents in the community, cleaning the beachfront and canvassing the neighborhoods with crucial information for residents.  The TLC Family of Camps was happy to not only support and help sponsor this great Day of Action, but also proud that 15 people (including staff members and their families) spent a day helping clean up the Rockaways with President Clinton & Chelsea Clinton.  Plans are underway to coordinate further volunteer opportunities to help with Sandy Relief.
